BUGS OF THE SECRET GARDEN
Helga taught Pes lessons on understanding nature in Australia.
Pes was a bright student. Together they were to observe behaviour endemic to the the great southern continent.
Helga, with her colourful Bavarian upbringing and Pes with her indelible understanding of folklore and fauna in Eastern Russia.
Deep in the woods, Pes was remembering the tale of Little Red Riding Hood and wondered if a wolf was hiding behind the big rock.
Helga said she couldn't smell any fury animals only the scent of a pink lilly and the over rippened grapes that were fermenting in the sun.
In the daisy patch, the bees were busy, gathering pollen and storing on their legs before flying off to the hive.
There were so many, Pes and Helga had to dodge the flying horders as they did not want to be bitten by any angry bees that may crash into them.
Pes thought those bees rude and tried to swat one that was flying too close to her.
Helga spotted a large billed bird busily stomping down some newly layed pavers near its nest in the sand.
Pes thought the fluffy bird had feet that made a good hammer but was concerned that it may have bashed its beak a bit much and put a curve in it.
They sat on the large sandstone rock and listened as the old blackboy told them tales of the ancient land, and waterfalls and palm berries the size
and colour of mangoes. How the early European settlers, mistaking the strange looking grass-tree for the local aboriginal inhabitants, discharged numerous gun shots in an attempt to erradicate them. The blackboy tree was a valuable friend to aborigines, who used the flowering spikes to
flavour ice cream, create fire and test whether their doughy donnuts and cakes were baked through on the inside.
Pes was green with envy while Helga thought the blackboy looked a bit scary and not really her taste in cooking.
Australia, often referred to as the 'land of parrots',
has over 2000 species of plants, two types of crocodile, a spiny anteater, 140 different snakes and many venomous spiders.
Personal insect repellent, coke, two-stroke oil, ice cream and sunscreen, can be purchased in one litre containers.
Wattle is the natural flower of Australia.
The dolls decided to sit in the shade by the rock pool to escape the midday heat from the sun.
Pes thought the reflection from the water was like the aura of the spirit beneath the rock. She wanted to give it food and a banana leaf incase
it created a whirlpool or big wave that could wash them off the rock. Helga explained that they were sitting three feet above the water level and
it may be wiser to find a big stick to hold onto should there be a big wave.
Pes was not convinced and told Helga there were some big spiders watching them from high up between the trees.
Later, while Pes was searching for the poppy pod family, she pointed out to Helga the wolf could be napping under the giant fern tree.
Helga thought that highly unlikely, as there were no furry smells or flies about.
Helga wondered about the naked man dancing with the grey Brolgas behind the bush near the pond.
Maybe he had found the poppy pod family? Pes wanted to search him for seeds.
The sound of the eerie stone dance froze the waterfall.
The dolls had a closer look, touchng the slippery icicles. Pes thought the ice would be handy if she had some lemonade and a glass and
reminded her of winter in Eastern Russia.
They wandered into the garden thinking of the ice, when the sky darkened and the growth closed in around them. Pes thought this must be the wolfs lair.
Helga told her they were most likely lost and needed to find the way out fast.
Helga saw some spiney plants a bug with long antenae and a huge beetle thing with giant compound eyes sticking out of each side of its head.
Pes thought Helga had found the poppy seeds and eaten them all.
Pes wanted to kiss some green frogs at the lilly pond but the music from the naked man must have frightened them all away.
Helga saw a lot of little ducks and thought that maybe the green frogs had been kissed already and had turned into ducks.
Pes giggled and thought that was silly.

There are about 300 types of lizards in Australia. Most prefer to suntan on rocks rather than sand, unlike humans and seaweed.
