 scary loves wigs
and hats
and berets... some day she plans to collect a firemans helmet, a pillbox hat, a French Foreign Legion hat, a Gaucho hat, a panama hat, a Marie Antoinette hat, a mormans hat, an anttique straw hat and maybe a Shady Brady Hat.  Scary just loves French hats and wants to travel to France to add to her collection.
Scary wondered if humans wore hats before they wore socks?

Is the Chefs hat a French tradition?

Scary and Lilly in winter hibernation

Scary Spicedoll was found lounging about in a carpet merchants alleyway store in the crowded market area of Pratumam, Bangkok Thailand, 1998.
A competent kick-boxer and water buffalo racing judge, she hibernates in a blanket when the temperature goes below 28 degrees centigrade, displaying an aggressive temperament if disturbed or uncovered.
Her favourite activities are abseiling, watching mirrors and sunbaking on vehicle dashboards and window sills.

In summer when she is not out hanging from the rope, she takes the little dolls on her knee and tells them exotic tales of the Far East, the Mekong River, Burma and Buddhism and how small wooden dolls with bald heads are stuck on sticks and used for pens and bookmarks. The little ones are horrified at the thought, as Scary informs them of a peculiar human species- identified as tourists and their insatiable need to collect souvenirs from all places on earth.

Scary was the appropriate name, for not only her appearance but from the tales of giant catfish, demon monkey gods,  fresh elephant droppings, water buffalo as big as tractors, frogs as big as dogs and water rats larger than cats. she recounted.  No wonder the little dolls were often frightened as they listened wide eyed, with hearts beating a thousand clock clicks a second.
They heard how the villagers milked trout fish for eggs and farmed giant frogs to marinate and stir fry with bean sprouts and rice for dinner.

The little dolls were intrigued by the cemetery house for discarded spirits.   They wondered why they weren't renovated or pulled down and some brand new offices or town house built in their place.  They heard how thai spirit housethere was a guardian spirit for the house; the garden; the rice paddy; the forests; the gate, the stairwell, the outside dunny, etc and each spirit needed its own house.  Scary told of big colourful and ornate spirit houses with large entrances and a verandah where furniture and images of people and animals would sit next to long thin burning incense sticks to watch the sun set in the evenings.  The house had to be an acceptable earthly abode and comfortable enough to invite the spirit to take up residence. Otherwise the spirit would throw a wobbley in disgust and tramp over the flower garden or blow the tiles from the roof.
Scary said the spirits could be good or evil but most were just finicky and mischievous, demanding their grocery order be delivered and the garbage put out each week.

Spirit houses in Australia were sometimes related to ancient brewing recipes and the labelling of religious circumstance to conform those who did not believe. Maybe Thai folklore and Buddhist tradition was more comfortable in its spiritual existence?
Scary sadly recounted the horrific tale of how in many Thai villages, a dolls head was ripped off and placed on a banana leaf cradle at a cross road outside the village in the belief that sickness caused by an evil spirit would enter the doll and leave the community.
More often than not a dog came along and ate the dolls head - taking the sickness back into the village in droppings along  the footpath.

The little dolls thought Pes would make a good protector spirit so their heads wouldn't be ripped off and eaten by a dog, they asked Scary to make a spirit house for her.
Scary explained that Pes already has an old wooden chest, which was sort of like a European spirit house.  She told them the haunting story of Pandora's box and the Spanish pirates treasure and of kelvinator and the American electric chest that froze everything put in it.
She consoled their fears in the fact that in time humans had learnt if they rip a dolls head off - it will unleash the evil spirit power of the voodoo flushing doll and every toilet on earth won't flush.

The little dolls were happy, but confused because Pes always wanted to rip the Barbie dolls head off.
